On a typical day at Ellis Island, the Registry Room would be crowded with inspectors, interpreters and of course, immigrants. Up to 5,000 people could be processed each day and the seats were always filled with the newly arrived immigrants waiting to pass their inspection.

The sounds of thousands of voices speaking different languages must have been overwhelming for our ancestors! The average stay in the Registry Room was 3 to 5 hours before they were approved and their hopeful journey into the US could begin.
